Jessie-Cats
She was my first ever collie and I must say that if I had known then what I know now about collies I'm not sure I would have had a collie at all.
She picked me ... I had gone to the farm to get a little outgoing boy as my kids were of an age that they needed a dog in their lives (and I had been without one for too long)
I sat on the floor and the litter of pups were charging about having a right game and then this very shy little lady, the runt of the litter crawled onto my lap, sighed and went to sleep. As it happens she was the one that they were worried about getting a home for. She was petrified of sheep so could not be worked and she was so timid that they didn't think anyone would pick her as a pet - how could I resist.
Jessie-cats (or Pup 'n stuff as she was know by the kids) loved children and was one of the brightest dogs I have ever known, she ran us ragged trying to keep her amused. We did think that she may be deaf as for the first few months she never responded to sounds or voice commands, then she let it slip, I asked the kids if they wanted ice-cream and she shot in from the end of the garden, turns out she had just simply been ignoring us.
She was always my son's dog and even when he'd flown the nest if he came home she would be straight to his side.
When I fostered and hand-rearing kittens she would fetch and carry them from the box for me, cleaning the fed one before bringing me the next. She never missed any out and mothered them all, needless to say we kept on for her and they were inseparable to the end. Partners in crime. Trigger would jump onto the top of the fridge and run her claws along the seal to open the door so her and Jess could help themselves. Jessie had always been trained to tidy-up and so put any wrappers in the bin then when they'd finished Jess would shut the fridge door (for months we'd blamed the kids for the missing food).
She lived to a ripe old age but eventually her body let her down which she found so hard because her mind was still as active as ever.
It is because of her I will now the collie type breeds.
Run free and happy and find all those streams in the Summerlands my very special lady.
You are and always will be missed very much. (2006)
