The average canine lifespan is estimated to be between 10-13 years, if dying of natural causes but unfortunately it seems that many of the dogs that pass through rescues do not get to have the luxury of an old age free from health issues. Cats fair a little better with the average being 15 years but ferrets can only expect to live to about 8 years.
Now I know that the pain of losing any animal is relevant to all pet owners, but it seems to be compounded for a fosterer simply because of the sheer number of animals that they have had cause to help over the years, plus of course the ones that stuck and became part of their own own family.
It breaks my heart when an animal that has had such a bad start in life finally finds the home of their dreams only to have that happiness cut short. As they say, whoever they are ... life just doesn’t play fair sometimes.
I really hope this lot are all having fun in the Summerlands while they wait for me or the people that came to love you. RIP.
